The South Carolina National Heritage
Corridor extends 240 miles across South Carolina, stretching from the mountains of Oconee County, along the Savannah River, to the port city of Charleston, including many historical attractions in St. George.
The 14 counties of the corridor offer a cross-section of South Carolina’s History, Culture, and Natural Landscapes. The area describes the evolution of upcountry and low country life, from grand plantations and simple farms to mill villages and urban centers, and how their history affected South Carolina as a state.
Rural St. George and the National Heritage Corridor - Protecting Our Treasured Landscapes
HISTORY: The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor was established by the U.S. Congress in 1996 as one of a select number of National Heritage Areas. That's a SC Historical Region in which entire communities live and work, to this very day. Our residents, businesses, and local governments have come together to conserve the "Special Landscapes" of the South.
The National Heritage Corridor protects a region of the state which retains a large percentage of rural landscapes.
The South Carolina National Heritage Corridor was established by the U.S. Congress in 1996 as one of a select number of National Heritage Areas: Regions in which entire communities live and work, and where residents, businesses, and local governments have come together to conserve special landscapes and their own heritage.
The Corridor contains an array of intact cultural resources representative of three major components of South Carolina's development. This is what you'll discover when you travel along the Heritage Corridor:
- The invention and development of our plantation system of agriculture
- The relationship of historic trade routes and the coastal SC Port Trade
- The settlement of South Carolina's Lowcounty, Midland fringes and the Upstate
The area also contains specific sites of importance to the Revolutionary and Civil wars, and numerous state park and recreational facilities. When visiting St. George, you'll just love the elegant, timeless beauty of our Historic Churches and Antebellum Shanties.
This Corridor, bounded at one end by the ancient port city of Charleston, and at the other by the mountains of the Blue Ridge, contains historic, cultural, and natural resources that tell the vibrant story of South Carolina's centuries-long evolution and culture.
